V. P. Chintan was a remarkable figure on the revolutionary movement, a man profoundly interested in the development of the scientific ideology in India, in the advance of the working class and the masses of the people. His involvement in the complicated struggle and quest to find a new path for the people of India lasted nearly half a century.
Born in Kerala on October 10, 1918, he joined the freedom struggle along with, practically the whole family as a schoolboy and was quickly attracted by the ideology of Marxism – Leninism and scientific Socialism. He joined the Communist Party in 1939.
VPC became a byword in the revolutionary movement for his straight forwardness and purity of ideological and personal commitment. B. T. Ranadive, a veteran and indeed a legendary figure in the Indian Communist movement, began his first V.P.Chintan Memorial Lecture by paying tribute to Chintan’s rare quality of being a communist who took the right to criticism, including self-criticism, seriously within the movement.
Another quality he highlighted was the hard strength and unflinching nature of Chintan’s practice as a communist which enabled him, along with thousands of his comrades, to stand up to and face severe repression and high risks from the enemies of the revolutionary movement.
Among other things Chintan’s revolutionary career involved a struggle, against the odds, to snatch time for reading, going deeper into things ideological, philosophical and theoretical and raising his own level of knowledge in a scientific sense.
The institution of the annual V. P. Chintan Memorial Lecture by the Indian School of Social Sciences, Chennai is a small tribute to a wonderfully inspiring personality who dedicated his life for more than half a century for the revolutionary movement.

வி.பி. சிந்தன். இந்தியாவில் விஞ்ஞானரீதியான தத்துவத்தின் வளர்ச்சியிலும், தொழிலாளி வர்க்கம், பொதுமக்கள் ஆகியோரின் முன்னேற்றத்திலும் மிகுந்த ஆர்வம் கொண்டிருந்தவர். புரட்சிகர இயக்கத்தின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கதொரு நபராக விளங்கியவர்.
1918 அக்டோபர் 10ஆம் தேதியன்று கேரளாவில் பிறந்த அவர், பள்ளிச் சிறுவனாக இருந்தபோதே, கிட்டத்தட்ட குடும்பத்தினர் அனைவரோடு கூடவே, விடுதலை இயக்கத்தில் குதித்தவர். வெகு விரைவிலேயே மார்க்சிய-லெனினிய தத்துவத்தின்பால், விஞ்ஞான சோஷலிசத்தின்பால் கவரப்பட்டார். 1939ஆம் ஆண்டில் அவர் தன்னை கம்யூனிஸ்ட் கட்சியுடன் இணைத்துக் கொண்டார்.
தனது வெளிப்படையான அணுகுமுறை, தத்துவ ரீதியான தூய்மை, தனிப்பட்ட வகையிலான கொள்கைப் பிடிப்பு ஆகியவற்றால் புரட்சிகர இயக்கத்தின் மறுபெயராகவே மாறினார் வி.பி.சிந்தன். இந்திய கம்யூனிஸ்ட் இயக்கத்தின் மாபெரும் தூண்களில் ஒருவராக விளங்கிய பி.டி. ரணதிவே, வி.பி.சிந்தன் நினைவுச் சொற்பொழிவின் முதல் பேருரையை ஆற்றியபோது, தனது உரையின் துவக்கத்திலேயே ஒரு கம்யூனிஸ்ட் என்ற வகையில் சுயவிமர்சனம் உள்ளிட்ட விமர்சனம் செய்வதற்கான உரிமையை இயக்கத்திற்குள் தீவிரமாகச் செயல்படுத்தியவர் என்று வி.பி. சிந்தனின் தனித்தன்மையைப் புகழ்ந்து பேசினார்.
அவர் சுட்டிக்காட்டிய வி.பி. சிந்தனின் மற்றொரு அம்சம் என்பது ஒரு கம்யூனிஸ்டின் செயல்பாடு என்ற வகையில் மிகுந்த மன உறுதி, எதற்கும் கலங்காத தன்மை ஆகியவை ஆகும். இத்தன்மைகள்தான் புரட்சிகர இயக்கத்தின் எதிரிகளிடமிருந்து புறப்பட்ட கடுமையான அடக்குமுறை, எண்ணற்ற அபாயங்கள் ஆகியவற்றை நேருக்கு நேராக எதிர்த்து நிற்கும் மன உறுதியை அவருக்கும், அவரோடு இணைந்த ஆயிரக்கணக்கான தோழர்களுக்கும் வழங்கியது.
எதிர்நீச்சலாகவே இருந்த புரட்சிகர போராட்ட வாழ்க்கைக்கு இடையிலும் தத்துவம், கொள்கை, சிந்தனை ஓட்டம் குறித்த நூல்களை ஆழமாகப் படித்து வி.பி. சிந்தன் விஞ்ஞான ரீதியில் தனது அறிவின் வரம்பை தொடர்ந்து விரிவுபடுத்திக் கொண்டே இருந்தார்.
புரட்சிகர இயக்கத்திற்காக அரை நூற்றாண்டிற்கும் மேலாக தனது வாழ்க்கையை அர்ப்பணித்த, மக்களிடையே உத்வேகத்தைத் தூண்டிய மகத்தான மனிதரின் நினைவிற்குச் செலுத்தும் சிறியதொரு அஞ்சலியாகத்தான் இந்த வி.பி. சிந்தன் நினைவு சொற்பொழிவை இந்திய சமூக விஞ்ஞானக் கழகம், சென்னை ஆண்டுதோறும் நடத்தி வருகிறது.

Indian School of Social Sciences, Chennai (ISSS) is a voluntary organization that facilitate a platform for discussion on intellectual topics. Though ISSS was formed in 1983, it has been registered as a society in 2018. ISSS organized various special Lectures and Seminars on Developmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Economic Sciences, and Political Science. ISSS has instituted memorial Lecture in the name of Legendary Trade Union Leader V.P. Chinthan and W.R.Varatharajan and other social activists. Moving forward, with the growing need of Intellectual thirst among the mass due to rapid increase in Literacy rate, ISSS would like to leverage the advancement of Technology to establish a website on its own. It has a plan to involve in research activities on developmental issues. It will intensify its effort to reach out to students, youth and workers.
